TUHS bus going to College Night
Taft Union High School is offering a free bus ride to the ninth annual College Night Monday, Sept. 8, at the Rabobank Convention Center in Bakersfield. The bus leaves the bus garage at 5 p.m.
College Night will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. at 1001 Truxtun Ave. The event is free and open to the public.
Representatives from 100 colleges, universities, trade schools the military will answer questions and offer information. High school and college counselors will be available. Informational sessions on financial aid, scholarships and public and private colleges will be offered in English and Spanish.
Students who want to ride the school bus to the event should sign up in the school’s guidance center and return a parent permission slip by Sept. 4. The bus will depart from the convention center around 8:40 p.m. and will make a dinner stop so students should bring money for food. Students will return to the bus garage around 10 p.m.
TUHS offers free SAT class
Taft Union High School is offering a free, 20-hour class to students who want to prepare for the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT). Many colleges require that applicants take the SAT as part of the admissions process.
Similar classes in Bakersfield cost between $100 and $150. All participants receive the book, The Official SAT Study Guide: For the New SAT. Students may use the book, valued at $19.95, to continue to prepare for the test after the course ends. Additionally, students who attend all sessions and take the pre-test and post-test will be reimbursed $25 to offset a portion of the registration cost for the SAT. Refreshments will be provided during all sessions.
Also, several scholarships awarded through the TUHS local scholarship program give special consideration to students who have above-average SAT scores. More than $160,000 in scholarships were awarded to seniors at Honors Night in May.
Instructors are: counselor Mike McCormick, English teacher Jim Carnal and math teacher Josh Tofte.
“I took the SAT preparation class and my SAT scores went up 100 points in math and another 50 points in English. I took the class a second time and my total went up another 50 points. I recommend this class,” Marty Fontes, a 2007 TUHS graduate, said.
Classes begin Saturday, Sept. 2, and end on Monday, Sept. 29. Classes will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays, Sept. 2, 9 and 16, Mondays, Sept. 22 and 29, and from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturdays, Sept. 6 and 27. All classes will be in Carnal’s room 136 in the main building, except for the final class, Monday, Sept. 29, which will be in room 160, upstairs in the main building.
