"Good Morning Taft High. Here's your morning announcements," has become the unfailing phrase that starts the school day for every Taft High Student alike. Greg Goossen's Advanced Multimedia class produces a video bulletin along with the help of the Web Publishing class and Computer Systems Management class taught by Caroline Schoneweis and Dave Dennis.
The video announcements are a student-run production. Their morning bulletin, is watched by every first period class on campus and are played "evenings at 7 and 11 and mornings at 7" on the Taft cable channel 11. The bulletin is truly one-of-a-kind, as Taft High is the only school in the nation to produce a daily show.
A typical show begins production the day before it is aired.
"When it's Wednesday in the real world, it's Thursday in ours," said Schoneweis. The classes work together to produce a quality five minute show complete with news, sports and weather anchors, along with clever skits that showcase the school's events in a more entertaining way than on the old fashioned printed bulletin.
In the beginning of their second year, the KTHN crew is looking to improve on their already hallmark production. Although there are only four returning students, there is a lot of energy among the new faces.
"Everyone is so enthusiastic this year," said senior and returning student, Monika Manuz. "Everyone wants to be here."
The show's popularity with the students last year has played a huge role in the large staff this year. Sophomore Jerardo Sanchez made an occasional appearance as "Jerardo the Science Guy" as a freshman on the show last year, and has since joined the production.
Whatever this group of students decides to add to their show next, it's bound to gain the adoration of students and community members alike.
As the anchors say in their daily signoff, "Be sure to check us out on the web at www.taft.k12.ca.us, and on Taft cable channel 11, evenings at 7 and 11 and mornings at 7."
