Estephanie Hinojosa-Ortiz and freshman Kyle Fleming are the Taft Union High Schools students of the month for February. Students are nominated by staff and selected by Renaissance Committee students.. The Renaissance program promotes academics.
“Everyone likes Karely!,” Greg Goossen, her TV Productions teacher said. “Karely is a very positive and sincere young lady. She always gives a genuine effort and produces high-quality projects.”
Her applied algebra teachers, agreed. Tom LeClair said, “Karely consistently produces excellent work, she is inquisitive and and
demonstrates a strong desire to accomplish great things. She has a wonderful personality and is a pleasure to work with.” Doug Taylor added, “On a daily basis, Karely is willing to help her student peers. She consistently has a great attitude and works diligently in class.”
Nominating teacher Jim Carnal added, “Karely has turned into a good student. She has a B+ in the sophomore English class she is making up. She is a good role model for the underclassmen.”
Adam Walker “is one of the kindest young men I have ever met,” nominating teacher Tom LeClair said. “He is very cooperative in class, attends every day and participates to the best of his ability.”
Brad VanRoekel agreed. “I had Adam last year in World History and this year in U.S. History. Adam is rather skilled in his knowledge of military history, a military "buff," if you will. We've had different discussions regarding tactics, weapons, and strategies.”
His P.E. teacher Brian Durkan added, “Adam is a great kid. He works very hard and is a joy to have in my class.”
“Stephanie Hinojosa-Ortiz is one of the top students in my English 10-Honors class and AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) II class. She has A’s in both. (AVID provides instruction such as note-taking skills, organization, collaboration and advanced reading and writing skills to give students a framework to succeed in college.)
“She works hard, strives to master challenging material, asks good questions, and stays on top of all of her assignments,” praised nominating teacher Bill Wolfe. “She has shown herself to be a determined, diligent, and curious student in my classes. Estephanie writes with thoughtfulness, skill, and clarity. It is clear that she is a young lady who will bring her college and career ambitions to fruition. She is well-liked by her classmates and admired by her teachers. Estephanie is not just an outstanding student; she is an outstanding young lady in all regards.”
Paul Martinez, her Oil-Technology Academy teacher, added, “What a wonderful student and overall good person. She is a strong member of the Oil-Technology Academy and we continue to get better because of students like her. It is a treat to have her in my class.”
Kyle Fleming “is an excellent reader and consistently produces very high A.R. (Accelerated Reader) point totals. He is conscientious and makes a concerted effort to do
a good job once he puts his mind to it,” his English teacher, Alan Popejoy, praised.
Varsity tennis coach Jim Carnal, the nominating teacher, added, Kyle is an honor roll student and has really taken to tennis. He is the top freshman tennis player. He works very hard and stays after practice. His enthusiasm is infectious.”
