Filing Opens For Taft City Council
July 17, 2010
A four-week window to file for three seats on the Taft City Council opened on Monday and will close Aug. 6, City Clerk Louise Hudgens announced.
The seats held by Councilmembers Paul Linder, Randy Miller and Cliff Thompson will be filled in the Nov. 2 general election. Each of the three is serving their second four-year term.
The seats now held by Mayor Dave Noerr and Councilmember Craig Noble will go before voters in November 2012.
The top three vote-getters will win the seats in the at-large election, Hudgens said.
As of Thursday afternoon, only one person had taken out papers to run and no one has turned in the required 20 valid signatures of registered City of Taft voters, she said. Signatures can't be collected on city property, such as at City Hall, Hudgens said.
She can't identify anyone taking out papers until the papers are turned in and the person is certified as a candidate, Hudgens said.
Candidates must be registered voters and live in the city limits, she said. There is no city filing fee, but it will cost $460 to have a candidate statement run in the Kern County voters guide, Hudgens said.
If any of the three incumbents do not seek reelection, deadline to turn in filing papers will be moved back to Wednesday, Aug. 11, the city clerk said.
