TUHS Seeks Hall of Fame Nominations
October 9, 2009
Taft Union High School officials are seeking nominations of graduates who have made a difference in the world for its Hall of Fame honoring distinguished graduates. The nomination deadline is Nov. 1 and the induction dinner will be April 24, 2010.
Twenty-one plaques honoring the individuals adorn the wall in the school's entryway, the first site visitors see as they go through the front doors.
The Board of Trustees, at the urging of trustee Stan Barrett, established the program in 2007 to honor outstanding alumni and to inspire current students to work toward similar accomplishments.
Barrett said many Taft graduates have amazing accomplishments. One graduate sacrificed his life in Viet Nam to save his squad when he fell on a land mine. He earned a posthumous medal of valor. "We have a three-star general, a computer expert." Senator Dianne Feinstein's (D-CA) father was a scholar-athlete and a founding member of the Taft High chapter of the California Scholastic Federation. Taft High graduates have operated on presidents, argued cases before the U.S. Supreme Court and serve as superior court judges.
Nomination forms are available by contacting the superintendent's secretary Sheri Gregory at 763-2330 or sgregory@taft.k12.ca.us.
The 14-member selection committee, chaired by Larry Peahl, also is seeking nominations for replacements. The committee consists of staff and alumni.
